Tarangire Safari

Part of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, Tarangire is famous for its high density of elephants and its iconic baobab trees.

Admittedly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when visiting Tarangire as it was a national park that I’d heard very little about. Let’s just say that the park absolutely blew my mind! If you are keen to see African elephants then this is definitely an experience for you to add to your bucket-list.

On my safari I saw more elephants than I cared to count plus a plethora of other native wildlife. Giraffes, zebra, impala, baboons and wildebeest made frequent appearances. I was even fortunate enough to stumble upon a group of sleeping lions!

Quick Facts

Location: Tarangire is 2.5 hours west of Arusha by road. Due to its close proximity to Arusha, Tarangire makes the ideal start or end to a northern safari circuit.

Best Time to Visit: June to October. This is the dry season, when herds of migratory animals are present. As this is the best time of year to visit, the park is at its most busiest.

Top Tip: Tarangire is a very seasonal park. Due to the migratory patterns of its inhabitants, you only really stand a good chance of seeing wildlife between June and October. For the rest of the year the herds are elsewhere.
